Scrambling for information mid-application causes errors, and errors delay the application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What to gather before you start:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Legal business name exactly as registered with your state, plus any DBA name<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>EIN (Employer Identification Number) \u2014 strongly recommended over using a personal SSN, since your registration information becomes publicly visible on FMCSA&#8217;s website<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stable business address, email, and phone number you control long-term (not a dispatcher&#8217;s number)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>States where you&#8217;ll operate and your operation classification: private vs. for-hire, interstate vs. intrastate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cargo categories you actually haul \u2014 don&#8217;t check every box; select only what applies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vehicle count, type, and GVWR for each power unit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>After you submit, you&#8217;ll also need a drug and alcohol testing consortium, driver qualification files, a maintenance program, and an ELD or HOS plan. Store your login credentials somewhere secure. You&#8217;ll need to log back in to renew, correct, and complete biennial updates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2026 Update:<\/strong> FMCSA is rolling out its new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmcsa.dot.gov\/new-registration-system-factsheet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Motus: USDOT Registration System<\/a> for all carriers in 2026. New and existing registrants will create profiles and manage their authority through Motus when it fully launches. As of now, first-time applicants still use the Unified Registration System (URS).
